Seth Godin wrote about Social Norms today.
In the article, he explains that to the extent that a person naturally conforms to the rules of behavior of a certain clique, group, family or society, to that extent they feel included.
Similarly, a person who does not conform appropriately sticks out like a sore thumb.
Or, at the very least, the social interaction is awkward.
If you experience an encounter with such a person – perhaps the person is you! – you feel a certain “weirdness” or unease or simply that something is just not quite right.
All you know is that you just don’t like the person…..or, you do.
“we interact with people who use the norm we use,” explains Seth. “We follow or read or hang out with people who use the same social constructs we do.”
This is the natural order of things.
Both online and off-, people are perpetually either looking for or creating communities who are “into” the same things as they are.
This is a good thing.
As a favor to a friend of mine, I spent some time helping her friend flesh out a new business idea. We achieved some real clarity around what it might look like and immediate next steps for her.
However, one of her ‘stuck points’ was actually choosing a population to market her services to. She didn’t want to exclude anyone, as most anyone could use her services.
Can you relate?
We discussed her challenges with the identifying a niche — This is common to almost every new (and not-so-new) entrepreneur – and many things came up. But, clearly the crux of the matter is that none of us can be all things to everyone; neither do we want to be when it comes down to it.
In fact, it really isn’t possible.
Seth offers that “People like us like people like us. If you’re not attracting the people you want to be attracting online, perhaps you’re not acting the way they do.”
If you’re clear on your niche; know and can identify (that is, you care about them) with their needs, challenges and desires; and can clearly articulate in their language compelling solutions, magnetically attracting only your best clients is easy, effortless, and fun.
